embracing guilt

Guilt is a hard emotion to feel. Most of us will do anything to avoid it.

People pleasing, perfectionism, and self-criticism are just some of the ways we try to protect ourselves from having to feel guilty about things.

But guilt means we are taking care of our own needs.

Guilt usually comes when we have done something for ourselves. Guilt is a sign that we’ve put ourselves first.

So next time you feel guilt, pause and reflect on where it’s coming from. Can you sit with it, and recognise that it has come from you setting a boundary that you needed to set? Can you let the guilt pass through you, accept the uncomfortable feeling, and not rush to ‘fix’ it by sacrificing yourself and your own needs yet again?
